A Time of Transition
"I, Paul, I'm already being poured out like a libation, and the time of my departure is at hand." (2 Timothy 4: 6)
It seems paradoxical that change is so difficult for most of us, yet so necessary for life's journey. Scientists tell us that when a species stops evolving, it moves toward extinction. Human beings have certainly evolved significantly over the tens of thousands of years that we've inhabited the planet. We have survived and more than that we have thrived!
On Wednesday, June 25, 2008 I became the new pastor of Sts. Peter and Paul parish. My coming here to this fine community of faith, has meant for me letting go of supportive friendships. I had served previously as a priest at St. Rose from 1987 to 1990, and then became for a pastor for the first time of St. Elizabeth of Hungary parish in Melville. Returning to St. Rose last June, for a year away from parish administration, was a kind of homecoming for me, and for many parishioners who had fond memories of me from 20 years ago. My change of assignment to Sts. Peter and Paul has been a bittersweet one as a consequence. Sad, because even in a short time I had renewed my love for old friends and made new ones; but more importantly, happy and sweet, because once again I have the God-given mission and grace to know you and serve you, as your shepherd and servant.
I know that this time of transition is a painful one for you. You have grown to know and love your first pastor, Father John McGratty, since the beginnings of Sts. Peter and Paul in 1996. It has surely been sad for you and Father John, as he departs for the community of St. Francis de Sales in Patchogue. But he takes you with him always, in his heart and in his memory. The Lord of compassion will surely heal your grief.
As I arrive, this weekend celebrates throughout the world, the feast day of Sts. Peter and Paul. Both men founded churches and loved the people of God profoundly. Both men knew the great sadness that comes from having loved well, when the time of departure draws near. Both men were martyred. They continue to inspire us with their witness.
"The Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the proclamation might be completed and all the Gentiles might hear it." (2 Timothy 4: 17)
I am eagerly anticipating many happy years with you! I am certain that in the Eucharist and in our common prayer, we can draw close to one another and to the Lord who is always there for us.
Peace and love,
Father Bruce
